Tiago Pires, Portugal’s representative on the WCT, pinpoints ‘Somewhere’ in Portugal

From Oct 19th to Oct 30th, Peniche will receive Rip Curl Pro Search, the 9th stop of the ASP World Tour.

In the Press Conference were: Laurentino Dias, Secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sport, Frederico Costa, Vice-President of Tourism of Portugal, António José Correia, Mayor from the Peniche Council, Tiago Pires, international surfer, Fred Basse, CEO of RIP CURL Europe, and José Farinha, General Manager of RIP CURL Portugal.

José Farinha mentioned the importance of Rip Curl bringing such an event to Portugal and outlined once more the environment concern, asking all the surfers and the people in general to preserve all the beaches and the environment.

Fred Basse remembered that, since his first time in Portugal, 20 years ago, RIP CURL was sure of the wave potential, such has the hospitality of the Portuguese people, especially from the people of Peniche. This event confirms that all this statements are true.

Tiago Pires, also known as Saca, confessed that he expects to take some steps up in the podium – because he is “playing home” – in the last edition of this stop in Bali, Tiago got the 3rd place.

António José Correia reinforced the proud that Peniche has, being the chosen city by RIP CURL and by the international surfers to receive this event. Peniche’s Mayor ended the Press Conference, giving a serigraphy, in the name of Portugal, by António Carmo, named “Ó Mar Salgado”, to Frad Basset the RIP CURL’s Europe CEO.

Frederico Costa spoke about some reasons to support surf in general and this event in particular, such as the promotion of the county, the opportunity of getting more tourists in October, since is not a high season and support the growth of local economy.

Laurentino Dias started his intervention saying hello to all the Portuguese surfers. “I have no modesty saying that the Government was the one who supported surf the most” said the Secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sport during his intervention. The various centers where surf has been included, and that we have all over the country are the proof of the bet. The number of high performance centers, where surf has been included, are the proof of the confidence that everyone has in surf and in all the national and international surfers.
